The 2011 Robie Pierce One Design Regatta

The 2011 Robie Pierce One Design Regatta was held at the American Yacht Club from May 19-22. The Robie Pierce Regatta’s mission is to get more people involved in adaptive sailing.

Fourteen teams from the US and Canada competed, each with an able bodied (AB) crew for ballast. Eleven races were run over two days and the winning team was Jonathan Evans and crew: 2008 Paralympic gold medalist Maureen McKinnon-Tucker and the AB duties were split between Evans’ brother Gansen and nephew Jake.

The boats involved were Ideal 18 sailboats from Larchmont Yacht Club (LYC) and American Yacht Club (AYC).  Each Ideal 18 has been customized with special chairs and harnesses to accommodate each sailor whose disabilities ranged from limb loss to quadriplegic. Both LYC and AYC supply the Robie Pierce Regatta Ideal 18s, with each club hosting the event in alternate years. 2011 Spring Series at the American Yacht Club

Last week we spent a fabulous weekend at our club, The American Yacht Club, located in Rye NY during their 2011 Spring Series. The AYC Spring Series is the inaugural sailing event in the western Long Island Sound racing circuit. Boats from all the different NY and CT clubs were present including members of New York YC, Huguenot YC, Larchmont YC, Manhattan Sailing Club and Seawanhaka Corinthian YC, Indian Harbor YC, Riverside YC, Stamford YC, Cedar Point YC and Pequot YC.
